West Bengal has been put on alert after two suspected cases of Nipah virus disease were detected, with the Centre deploying a National Joint Outbreak Response Team to support the state’s containment and public health measures. The suspected cases were identified at a Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) at AIIMS Kalyani, as per reports.
Given Nipah’s high fatality rate and the risk of person-to-person transmission in healthcare settings, authorities have moved quickly to scale up surveillance, strengthen laboratory backup and enforce infection prevention protocols. Central and state officials have also coordinated on field investigation, risk assessment and communication to reduce panic while ensuring preparedness.

Reports said the national response includes experts drawn from institutions such as the All India Institute of Health and Public Hygiene (Kolkata), the National Institute of Virology (Pune), the National Institute of Epidemiology (Chennai), AIIMS Kalyani and wildlife experts under the environment ministry. In addition, guidelines on Nipah virus disease were shared with West Bengal’s Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), and national coordination mechanisms were activated to monitor developments and steer support.
