India on track to start commercial semiconductor chip production in 2026, minister says

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India is on track to begin commercial semiconductor chip production in 2026 under the India Semiconductor Mission timeline launched in 2022. He indicated multiple plants are expected to commence operations in 2026, with pilot production already starting at some units in 2025, alongside rapid ecosystem development and skills training.

Commercial chip production timeline

India is moving closer to domestic semiconductor manufacturing at scale, with Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stating that commercial chip production is expected to begin in 2026. The report said the timeline aligns with the goals set under the India Semiconductor Mission launched in January 2022, which aimed to start commercial output within five years.

The minister indicated that four plants are expected to commence operations in 2026. He also pointed to pilot production having started in three plants in 2025, signalling that parts of the programme are already transitioning from approvals and construction to early production runs and process validation.

Ecosystem build-out: equipment, materials, and talent

Beyond fabrication capacity, the report highlighted claims that a wider semiconductor ecosystem is taking shape, including participation from global equipment manufacturers and the emergence of a local materials base. Building this ecosystem is critical because reliable chip output depends on a deep network of suppliers for chemicals, gases, tools, testing, packaging and logistics.

The talent pipeline was also emphasised. The minister said skill development targets are progressing quickly, with a large number of professionals trained in a short span. Semiconductor manufacturing requires specialised training across process engineering, cleanroom operations, quality control, and equipment maintenance, and rapid workforce scaling is often a bottleneck for new manufacturing hubs.

Why the 2026 milestone matters

If commercial production ramps as projected in 2026, it could reduce dependence on imports for select categories of chips and strengthen supply resilience for sectors such as telecom, automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial systems. It may also help India attract further investment in adjacent areas like advanced packaging, design services, and electronics manufacturing.

The next phase will hinge on consistent yields, cost competitiveness, and the ability to secure long-term demand contracts. Even after commercial start, scaling to stable high-volume output typically takes time, but the stated 2026 launch would mark a major shift from policy ambition to manufacturing delivery.
